Growing up in San Jose, CA, Doris Bettencourt was raised in a large Pentecostal family with ten siblings. She is one of four family members living with a rare genetic eye disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa, which causes progressive vision loss. Although she was diagnosed at the age of 18, her vision issues began as early as age 5. Despite her visual impairment, Doris has always been active in sports, competing in cross country during junior high and on the track team at De Anza College.
In 2001, she was declared legally blind, which greatly increased the challenges of being a young mother balancing a demanding job in human resources and a growing family. She faced struggles with depression, relied on medication, and doubted herself. However, she eventually found comfort in God and the outdoors, particularly through purposeful prayer hikes.
Today, with a continued strong faith, Doris dedicates her time as a sea kayaking guide for a local nonprofit and a cook at her church. She has also become a life coach, using her own experiences to inspire and support others on their spiritual journey while promoting a healthy lifestyle. Although her vision continues to deteriorate, Doris remains active in sports and regularly participates in half marathons, Spartan races, and triathlons. In 2021, she joined an all-blind swim team that takes part in the Trans Tahoe Relay, swimming across Lake Tahoe every year. Doris holds a Bachelor of Science in Recreation from San Jose State University.
